Many managers will come across this a few times in their career. One of the drawbacks to a management role is that you don’t always get to pick your direct reports. Perhaps you inherited the employee when starting a new management role, or the organization restructured and your team had an open spot. No matter how they got there, you are their manager and need to be able to work with and manage them effectively.
It’s unreasonable to expect yourself to like everyone all the time. People are all different, which can be very beneficial in the workplace and something you typically want in your team. Employees with different backgrounds, experiences, and skills can bring a variety of ideas and methods to a project. But when one of those “great for the team” employees rubs you the wrong way, you need to be able to look past their irritating qualities and put the company or project first.
