Wellness Is ‘Snow’ Joke: Maintaining Workplace Wellness in the Winter

Winter is here, and with it the snow, the cold, and the long dark nights. Even when the weather is nice and the sun is shining, employees can find it difficult to do their best work. Some employees may even suffer from seasonal affective disorder, which can cause significant depressive effects in sufferers. Winter makes maintaining health and wellness difficult to the point that it can seem impossible that spring will ever arrive.

Despite how tough it is to maintain workplace wellness in the winter months, employers should make the effort to do so. Wellness is important year-round, affecting productivity, turnover, and employee engagement, and employers have considerable control over the conditions that make workplace wellness possible.

Employees spend a lot of time at work, and despite increasing calls for work–life balance, work inevitably influences every other part of employees’ lives. If employers take positive steps to reduce or eliminate stressors in the workplace, and to promote wellness in general, employees are likely to feel widespread relief and wellness throughout all aspects of their lives.

Some options for improving wellness might be challenging for smaller businesses, but organizations of every size can still find reasonable, effective methods to maintain or improve wellness during the difficult winter months.
