COVID-19 Question Series: How Much Should You Be Cleaning?

In a difficult time like this, we wanted to make sure the answers to these challenging questions were available, so we’ve created a multi-part question series on our blog to help ensure employers and HR professionals have access to the information they need. In this article, we discuss some precautions you should take to slow the spread of COVID-19. You may be forgetting to clean some commonly touched surfaces.

What precautions should we take to slow the spread of COVID-19 through contact with surfaces in our workplace?

Based on information from the government of Canada, it is not certain how long the virus that causes COVID-19 survives on surfaces, but it seems to behave like other coronaviruses. Preliminary information suggests that the virus may persist on surfaces anywhere from a few hours to several days.


Spot the frequently touched surfaces.



Proper hygiene can help reduce the risk of infection or spreading infection to others. To protect yourself and employees from COVID-19, make sure to do the following when handling products:

  • Use good hygiene measures;
  • Regularly clean and disinfect surfaces;
  • Wash your hands often with soap and water for at least 20 seconds, especially after using the washroom and when preparing food;
  • Use alcohol-based hand sanitizer if soap and water are not available; and
  • When coughing or sneezing, cough or sneeze into a tissue or the bend of your arm, not your hand, and dispose of any tissues you have used as soon as possible in a lined waste basket and wash your hands afterwards.

Did you get them all?



Surfaces frequently touched with hands are
most likely to be contaminated, including:

  • Cabinet handles;
  • Countertops;
  • Doorknobs;
  • Electronics;
  • Elevator buttons;
  • Faucet handles;
  • Handrails;
  • Light switches; and
  • Tables;

Keeping these frequently touched surfaces clean is one way you can help slow the spread of COVID-19. If you are an essential business and are still operating with employees, wiping down these surfaces often with the proper cleaning solutions is critical. You should also identify other commonly used appliances, machines, or workspaces and clean them thoroughly. Of course, this alone will not stop the spread of the virus, but it can help slow it down. As always, follow the full guidelines provided by the government of Canada.
